Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) is a diverse group of diseases joint by the insufficient function or lack of insulin resulting in a high level of blood sugar (hyperglycemia). Most commonly, diabetes is associated with obesity and the so-called metabolic syndrome. This type of diabetes (type 2 diabetes) is currently on a sharp rise and very soon 10% of the population of the Czech Republic will suffer from this disease. Type 1 diabetes is less common. It results from the destruction of insuling-producing pancreatic cells by an inflammatory autoimmune process.

Diabetes is a disease which affects metabolism of all major nutrients, sugars, fats and proteins. To ensure proper body functioning, the patients are dependent on lifelong administration of insulin or medication. The principles of dietary treatment of diabetes (eating healthy foods and counting the amount of received carbohydrates) are generally known. Despite the fact that diabetes is often associated with obesity, it can be paradoxically associated with the loss of skeletal muscle and worsening of load tolerance, especially when the body is exposed to excessive stress. Therefore, it is advisable for patients with diabetes to reduce the intake of carbohydrates and increase the intake of premium proteins. This is necessary especially at the time of higher body load, such as acute diseases, injuries, elective surgeries etc. Also chronic complications of diabetes, especially kidney disease and diabetic foot (poorly healing chronic wounds on the foot) are often associated with a higher need for protein and energy that you need to get from a good diet.
